A Busy End to the Fall Term!

The fall term ended with a Spanish Assembly on Monday, December 12 when the K-2 Spanish students shared their songs, projects and dances with the rest of the lower school students.  The assembly was a celebration of all they have learned this semester before they switch to Mandarin when they return in January.

Kindergarten (KG):  After the students introduced themselves one-by-one in Spanish, they each showed a drawing of their favorite color while saying the phrase Mi color favorito es ______.  They finished their presentation with a Spanish song about colores.

First Grade (1H):  The students in Mrs. Hardin’s class had spent several classes learning the Mexican hat dance and they all performed it beautifully!

Second Grade (2D):  The second graders performed the much-loved Dr. Seuss classic book Huevos verdes con jamón (Green Eggs and Ham). The students did an excellent job of memorizing their lines and creating colorful posters of the story’s vocabulary.

While the K-2 students were practicing for the Spanish Assembly, the rest of the Spanish students were working hard too!

Third Grade:  The third graders started work on the first two chapters of their “A Day in the Life…..”  style books.  The first chapter focused on morning routine verbs like me levanto (I get up) and me visto (I get dressed).  The second chapter focused on el desayuno (the breakfast) vocabulary. They also had their first Spanish vocabulary quiz, and they all did a fantastic job! Finally, we also found some class time to learn about Las Posadas, a Mexican Christmas tradition.

Fourth Grade:  The fourth graders finished a study of South America with a short research project on a Spanish-speaking country of their choice.  They used books and websites to research the facts and then wrote a detailed paragraph about their country to display next to a map of South America on the classroom bulletin board.

Fifth Grade:  The fifth graders spent several classes researching their Aztec topics in order to create informative posters.  Each poster included detailed written information about the topic, at least 3 photos with captions, 2 original drawings with captions and a decorative poster title and bibliography of their resources.  They then read each other’s posters to answer questions about the Aztec culture.  They wrapped up the unit with a short quiz on the facts and Spanish cultura terms they had learned.
